The biggest mistake people are making while trying to save money on food, is buying cheap snacks and junk food. As a result they end up spending more on doctors and pills. The best way to go is cooking cheap, which doesn’t have to mean unhealthy.
There are some food items that should be found in every frugal kitchen. They are:
- Seasoned vegetables
Pasta (even organic and whole grain) is pretty cheap, it lasts long and there are plenty of things you can do with it. You can make pasta salads, you can experiment with pasta sauces, or just eat it with cheese. It doesn’t take any special skills to make pasta and it can be prepared very fast.
Eggs are also going to help you in achieving your “cooking cheap” goal. There are so many ways to prepare eggs and they are pretty inexpensive. If you learn how to bake (which I strongly recommend in order to save money and still have fun eating), eggs are a must in your home. Also, they are a great source of protein.
It is a no brainer that vegetables are very good for you. They have much more nutritional value if you buy them organic or at least buy them locally. Here is my post on how to get organic on a budget. Buy vegetables in season. They are cheaper and taste better. Eating tomato in winter doesn’t really give you many health benefits.
Flour is another must in your home. When I got married I didn’t know how to cook or bake and I was afraid to try because I thought it was too complicated. Well, it is not. I bake a lot now and it is so much fun. Also, everyone says that homemade bread and desserts taste better and they are MUCH healthier for you and your kids. If you are still doubting your cooking abilities, invest in a bread maker. You will not bake cookies with it, but you can make certain cakes and, of course, bread, which comes out warm and delicious. Cooking cheap doesn’t have to be frustrating or unhealthy. Food is overrated in this country. Remember, that you eat to live and don’t live to eat. Live simply and frugally.
