Frugal Tips

Frugal tips for all. Simple ways to save and earn.

In case you didn’t know, the U.S. Government set millions of dollars aside to help Americans who are in debt.

While the government debt help is a great option to help you reduce your debt, not everyone is eligible for it.

If you would like to know if you qualify for a government grant, you should go to Grants.gov and browse through the grants which are currently available for individuals. Make sure not to select small business or organizations grants, because even if the site will let you submit your applications, it will immediately be rejected.

There are no general criteria for grant qualification (other being a US citizen and being 18 years old or older), because every grant is different and is given for different purposes. For example, there is a grant called NEA literature Fellowships. It will help you pay for your creative writing classes (if you haven’t taken any before), but it will certainly not cover your credit card debt.

Different grants are available at different times, so if you can’t find anything for you right away, you should check the website once in a while.

It is always the best bet to go to official government websites to obtain grant information. Scam artists are not sleeping, so don’t trust every mailer or every email offering you free government grants. Remember that:

- Government is never going to send you unsolicited emails or letters to offer you free money.

- Government grants can’t be given over the phone. If someone calls you and tells you that you got a grant you never applied for, they are trying to scam you. You need to apply for grant to be eligible for it.

- Government grants do NOT require any fees. They simply don’t, so if you landed on a website which asks for the application fee, close the page immediately; even if the website looks official and the fee is small.

Of course, keep in mind that no government grant will help you become completely debt-free, so don’t go nuts and don’t start spending money you don’t have just because you qualify for the grant. Government grants were created to help people who are really in need and not those who just can’t control their spending habits.
