Frugal Recipes: Homemade Pizza for Less.

Aug-4-2011 By Frugal 101

Pizza is considered to be the most popular cuisine in America. It is one of our favorite meals as well. To be honest I ruined a lot of products before I found my perfect recipe. Now that I’ve found, I am sharing it with you. It requires minimal efforts, minimal products and it has never failed me:

For the dough you need: 4 cups of unbleached white or bread flour, 2 and a half spoons of active-dry yeast, lukewarm water and salt.

1. In a large bowl mix flour with salt.

2. In a separate small bowl or a cup dissolve yeast in ¼ cup of warm water.

3. Mix flour with dissolved yeast. Add ¼ to a ½ of warm water and make dough. If you need more water, add some more. If you accidentally put too much, don’t panic. Add some extra flour and it should be fine. You will just have more dough.

4. Knead the dough for 5-10 minutes.

5. Put your dough in warm place and let it rise. I slightly preheat my oven, then turn it off and let the dough rise there for an hour or two.

In the meantime, make sauce.
You will need: tomato paste, olive oil, onion, garlic, salt, basilica, oregano and water.

6. In a medium skillet cook chopped onion and garlic until gold or light brown. Add 5 table spoons of tomato paste and ½ to a cup of water to make your sauce the consistency of ketchup. Add spices. I usually use salt, basilica and oregano, but if you feel creative, go ahead. Cook together for 5-10 minutes on medum. Set aside.

7. After your dough has risen (it should double in size), put it on pizza pan and try forming pizza. I usually put a few drops of oil on pizza and form pizza with my hands.

8. Evenly spread sauce on it.

9. The rest is up to your fantasy and imagination. Of course, shredded mozzarella cheese is a must, but other than that you can put whatever you find in the refrigerator. On our pizza we often put mushrooms, more garlic (it is never enough for me), tomatoes, green and red peppers, olives, and even bacon.

10. Put pizza on the middle shelf of your oven and let it bake for 20-25 minutes at 375-400F.

11. Get it out, let it cool a little, cut and enjoy.

12. Don’t eat too much. We are always guilty of it when it comes to homemade pizza.
