How to Buy Kids Clothes for Cheap

Sep-19-2009 By Frugal 101

I love kids’ clothes. They are so cute and bright, and every time I go to the store I have to use my will power not to buy the entire rack. I like to find ways to buy kids clothes for cheap, because my kids seem to grow out of them before I get them out of the shopping bags. Thankfully, there are plenty of ways to score cute children clothing for unbelievably low prices.

1.    Buy clothes that are one size too big. Sweaters, tops, shirts and coats are easy to adjust by rolling up the sleeves. From my experience girls dresses don’t need any maintenance or adjustments. When I look at sizes 3T and 4T, they look pretty much identical except the length.  Buying bigger pants and jeans might be harder, but if you know how to hem them, it shouldn’t be a problem.

Don’t do this when buying infant footed sleepers though. I was stubbornly buying them in bigger sizes, and my poor son would wake up in the middle of the night, looking like a mermaid, with two legs stuck in one.

2.    Find outlets in your area. The closest outlets are about an hour away from us, so I never really bothered going there until one day my friend invited me to go along. I was shocked to see the prices. The best one was the Children’s Place. Rack of really cute hoodies for $1.99, baby shoes for $0.99, jeans for $2.99; 5 summer hats for $1 total. Crazy! I not only stocked up for the next few years, but bought a bunch of stuff for my friends’ kids to give as gifts. It is not worth the drive if you only need a pair of jeans, but if you need a lot of stuff, GO NOW!

3.    Shop on eBay. Many moms who are done with having kids can’t wait to empty the closets. EBay is a great place to buy kids clothes for cheap, because you can buy in lots, and you can also buy used clothing. Because kids grow up fast, “used” clothing is USUALLY barely worn, so if you don’t mind buying used, you can get some fantastic deals on all kinds of clothes, including the brand name ones.

4.    Buy stuff for next year. My favorite place to do this is Old Navy. They always have clearance rack with decent prices. Additionally, they run really good promotions sometimes, when they take 50% off CLEARANCE items. If you want to get notified about these promotions, join their mailing list. You will get a bunch of coupons via email as well. I shop their online store sometimes as well, but the selection in B&M is usually much better, and so are the deals.

5.    Control yourself.
This is the best way to save money on children clothing. Your baby looks cute no matter what she is wearing, so don’t go nuts and buy her 15 outfits per season. She will outgrow it before you blink. Get something for yourself instead. ;-)
