6. Look for generic organic foods at the supermarkets and grocery stores. For example, Wegmans food store has their own brand of organic juices, which are 2-3 dollars cheaper per bottle than big organic brands.
7. Don’t overeat. Foreigners are usually shocked by the portions Americans eat. When I came here I couldn’t believe the sizes of portions at restaurants and the amount of food people throw away.
I know it is not fun, but if you eat only when you are hungry and don’t overeat, you can save a lot of money.
8. If you are too stubborn and suspicious to join co-ops or find farmer’s markets, shop for organic foods selectively. There are certain non-organic foods, such as bananas, onions or avocados, which tend to be lower in pesticide levels and therefore, are relatively safe. Foods like apples, celery and potatoes have the highest levels of pesticide residue, so it is really important to buy them organic.
9. If you want to be frugal, learn how to cook. Admit that using a cake from a box, or making mashed potatoes from powder, is not really cooking. Roll up your sleeves and learn how to cook from scratch. Cooking from scratch can save you a lot of money and it is not as bad as it sounds. I have to admit, I have 2 left hands, but even I learned how to cook. If I could do it you could too. The more I do it the less time it takes me. Homemade food tastes better, it is healthier for you and it is much cheaper. Plus, all of our friends think that I am really cool.
10. If you live in a house, grow your own produce. It is very easy to grow tomatoes, cucumbers or zucchini. There is tons of information on organic gardening on the internet.
11. Buy a yogurt maker and a bread machine. These were two of the best investments I have ever made. You can buy both of them for under a $100. You will end up saving a lot of money in the long run. My only warning is – you may gain weight. Homemade bread smells and tastes so good, that you stop caring about your waist and hips.
12. Remember the long-term benefits of organic and healthy foods. If you eat wise, you will save a lot of money on doctors and pills.
