Five Simple Ways to Reduce Debt Fast

Dec-9-2011 By Frugal 101

There are many ways to reduce debt fast, but not all of them are easy.

These are my favorite ways to eliminate debt, because they don’t require much effort, but are quite effective.

1. Drop your bad habits immediately. If you like to smoke or to overeat, you are not only spending money on the things you don’t really need, but you are damaging your health. Being sick is not cheap, so do yourself a favor and drop your bad habits now. You will thank yourself later.

2. Go to the library. Since you are paying taxes for using the library, why not actually use it? Don’t sped money on buying books or renting DVDs, because you usually can get all these things for free.

3. Have a beer at home. If you like to have drinks with your dinner or simply like to go out to a bar, consider having your drinks at home instead. Drinks at bars and restaurants are way overpriced and depending on how heavily you drink, you can save thousands of dollars a year by either skipping drinks or having them at home. Yes, it is not as much fun to drink at home, but being in debt up to your eyeballs is not fun either.

4. Wear a hoodie. Reduce the temperature on your thermostat and save hundreds of dollars a year. Wearing a sweater can save you money and protect the planet as well

5. How about cooking for a new hobby? Cooking at home is cheaper and healthier than buying frozen meals at supermarkets or eating out. It is also a great hobby if you want to impress your significant other.

  1. Jane Said,

Great tips. I love your advice # 4. It sounds very funny (Wear a hoodie – ;) ). But I think it’s absolutely true

  2. Not Sure Said,

Tip #5 I disagree with. I spend much less by buying frozen meals. I can buy more meals for me and my two kids that way compared to cooking. Plus I save money and time by not running the oven and stove.

    Just my two cents ;)

  3. Come Again Said,

These tips aren’t necessarily for reducing debt…

  4. Frugal 101 Said,

Well, they work for a lot of people, including my family.
Do you mind sharing your tips?

  5. Frugal 101 Said,

I see your point :) . We are health freaks and don’t do frozen meals also because they are often much more processed and have preservatives I’d rather avoid. Our pediatrician advised us against those too. There are some natural and organic brands with less junk in them, bu they are rather pricey. I also grew up on homemade cooking, so anything frozen just doesn’t taste the same. But it’s just me.;)
